Sally Spicer - Portrait Artist

Sally is a full-time artist in Northland, New Zealand. She paints portraits and figures in watercolours and oils.
Sally's dedication to painting people is due to her fascination with the endless variety of personality, expressions and gestures, and the beauty of the human form.

Using a mixture of personal family and found vintage photographs, Sally creates scenes that seem to inhabit both the past and the present, exploring youth, childhood, memory and nostalgia.

Some of the paintings reflect a sense of humour, with play, discovery, wonderment and mystery. Others are elegant and emotional and tinged with melancholy.

Sally uses warm, dramatic lighting and careful composition to make the viewer feel drawn into the scene, to create a sense of intimacy and familiarity.

She frequently exhibits in galleries and takes commissions.

Sally was born and raised in Whangarei, New Zealand. She has a life-long love of drawing and painting. She moved to Auckland in 1996 to complete her High School education. She went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at Elam School of Fine Arts, majoring in Printmaking.

Sally worked in jewellery design and retail at a jewellery manufacturers in central Auckland for 8 years, before moving back to Whangarei in 2011 to start a family.

She currently works from her home studio.
